Victorian Hairwork Mourning Cross with 10K Gold Filled Caps. This antique pendant or watch fob was made about 1860 - 1875 of woven human hair. Making jewelry and mementos from hair was popular in the Victorian era. Often, objects were made in mourning of a lost loved one and were fashioned from the hair of the departed. Jewelry was also woven from the hair of the artist herself as a type of betrothal gift. This cross is made of reddish auburn hair and is finished with fittings of 10K Gold Fill that are elegantly chased with scrolls.
This piece is in excellent condition, with no damage to the hair or fittings noted
