Antique Hand Painted Miniature Portrait in Gold Filled Snake Frame AS IS. Snakes became a fashionable motif in jewelry after after Prince Albert designed an engagement ring of entwined double snakes for Queen Victoria. The snake was believed to symbolize eternal love.
The brooch was made about 1900 and features a hand painted portrait of a young woman under glass in a three dimensional gold filled frame in the form of a snake whose tail coils about its head. Measures approximately 2 3/8 inches by 1 3/4 inches. The pin has a hinged stem and very early roll over clasp.
This piece was too lovely to pass up, even though it is in a less than perfect state. There is some wear to the gold plating, some paint loss to the portrait, the pin stem is bent, and only one bracket remains on the reverse to hold the portrait in the frame. For this reason, the brooch is offered in AS IS Condition.
ERA: Victorian, 1900
METAL/MATERIALS: Gold Filled, Glass, Portrait
HALLMARKS/HISTORY: No mark.
CONDITION: AS IS Condition, as noted above.
SIZE/MEASUREMENT: Brooch measures 2 3/8" x 1 3/4".
