Antique Sterling Silver Gilt George V Anointing Spoon. The original anointing spoon is made of solid gold and is the oldest single element of the British Royal regalia. It has been used in every crowning ceremony of a British monarch since 1603. This large replica spoon is designed to closely resemble the original anointing spoon and features a double lobed bowl with chased acanthus leaf decoration, as well as a handle with two monsters, decorative medallion, and spiral that ends in flat knop.
This particular spoon was made to commemorate the coronation of Charles V in 1911. It was made in 1910 in London by the Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co. Ltd. and bears the appropriate touch marks on the reverse of the bowl. The spoon is made of solid 925 sterling silver, with gilt bowl, which has been slightly worn away from years of polishing. The spoon is 10 1/4 inch long, with the bowl 2 1/8 inch wide. It weighs 99.7 grams. The spoon is in very good vintage condition with minor wear to the gilding.
